Scheduling Your Imaging Study

MRI, ultrasound, and CT scans give your doctor a detailed look at the bones, nerves, and soft tissues of your hand and arm.

What kinds of imaging are there?

  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): uses a magnet to create detailed pictures of soft tissues — nerves, tendons, ligaments, and the brachial plexus. Often used for unexplained pain, suspected ligament or tendon tears, mass evaluation, and nerve compression that is not clearly seen on other tests.
  • Ultrasound: uses sound waves to look at superficial structures in real time. Useful for nerves, tendons, fluid collections, and small masses. Painless and quick.
  • CT (Computed Tomography): uses X-rays to build a 3D picture of bone. Often used for complex fractures, suspected scaphoid nonunion, or surgical planning.

Dr. Barrera will tell you which type of imaging he is ordering and why. You must have a written order before scheduling.

For specialized nerve and brachial plexus imaging, Dr. Barrera works closely with the following specialists. If your order is for one of these studies, request the named physician when you schedule.
